The Question is:
How can I run something like a Microsoft Exchange CLIENT under OpenVMS (just
like such a client on a PC)? with the Microsoft Exchange server (another
machine) doing the delivery and receipt? Can TCP/IP (I am running Compaq
TCP?IP Services for OpenVMS Vers
ion V5.1) be configured to do this?
The Answer is :
OpenVMS has various standards-compliant mail clients available,
including the mail client within Mozilla. These tools allow access
to a POP3 or IMAP server, for the storage and retrieval of mail.
Like Microsoft Outlook Express, these can access remote servers
on various platforms, including the standards-compliant POP3 and
IMAP servers available for and running on OpenVMS.
The OpenVMS Wizard is unaware of a port of Ximian Evolution package
and its extra-cost Exchange Connector or other such direct connection
into Microsoft Exchange -- that said, Microsoft Exchance Servers can
apparently be configured to provide POP3 and IMAP services. Please
contact a Microsoft Wizard for information on Microsoft products and
options. (If your Exchange Server can be accessed by Microsoft Outlook
Express, you can likely use one of the OpenVMS mail clients.)
Your OpenVMS Alpha and TCP/IP Services versions will both want to be
upgraded to more current releases (and ECOs), particularly for best
Mozilla and Java support and operations.
