File DELETE I/O Performance?

The Question is:

 
I have an ES45 Alpha system runnning VMS 7.3.1.  When I delete or purge a large
 file (1000000 blocks or more) the disk the file is on locks up for several
 minutes until the file is deleted. Is there a way to delet these large files
 without hanging the sys
tem
 

The Answer is :

 
  The OpenVMS Wizard might ask if erase-on-delete is enabled, or if
  the disk is excessively fragmented, or if there is I/O contention.
  Deletion is normally very quick.
 
  Please ensure you have the mandatory ECO kits loaded.
