The Question is:
How do I upgrade
The Answer is :
Please review the available release notes and the upgrade documentation,
then please perform the system disk backup (as described in the upgrade
documentation), and then perform the upgrade as described in the OpenVMS
documentation. Then perform an additional BACKUP, should you need to
revert to the upgraded version or back out an ECO kit or similar -- and
further, restoration of this BACKUP/IMAGE will defragement your system
disk.
If available, perform disk-to-disk image backups of your system disk,
as the cost of these additional disk drives is trivla when compared to
the speed improvements for the operation and for the performance of
the disk restoration (if required).
Again, please review the release notes and new features manuals for
each intermediate release and for the target release, and please read
the upgrade manuals for each OpenVMS release you will be upgrading
through as well as the release you are upgrading to. All this reading
and the BACKUP operations should be completed before performing the
upgrade.
Upgrade paths are listed in the OpenVMS FAQ, as are pointers to
the manuals of the current OpenVMS documentation set.
One usual approach -- performing the upgrade, then reading the release
manuals upon occurance of an overt upgrade failure -- is not recommended.
