TLZ07 tape on VAX 4000 model 705A?

The Question is:

 
I have attached a tlz07 scsi tape drive to a vax 4705a. I seem to be unable to
 get the drive to use any sort of compression. I also seem to be unable to
 dismount a tape either with dismount/unload or by pressing the button on the
 tlz07 unit. The only opti
on being a cold start on the tape unit. Can I assume that this tape drive is
 just unsupported by the vax 4000 series?
