The Question is:
Is it possible to install a second NIC card on a VMS server, so that it is
available on 2 different DECnet networks ?
The Answer is :
If you have multiple NICs, your DECnet host must be configured as a
router. If the DECnet addressing of both networks is compatible, you
will be able to operate on both networks.
As this particular situation is not expected to be a problem with
DECnet-Plus addressing nor with properly-matched DECnet Phase IV
addressing, the involvement of disparate DECnet Phase IV routing
networks is here assumed.
Assuming DECnet Phase IV, you can implement a DECnet address gateway
using sequence of an area router (level 2 router), a non-area router
(level 1 router), and an area router. As area routers require direct
connections to all other area routers within the same area, this path
is not recognized by the area routers. To route connections through
between the two disparate DECnet networks, you must specify a list of
DECnet hosts on the commands (a path), and the path specification must
include the non-area router. (This approach is not supported, and
clearly violates the DECnet area routing requirements.)
Unfortunately, the Address Translation Gateway product is no longer
available -- this was a DECnet Phase IV router that patched the DECnet
network packet addresses as required for proper route-through.
