The Question is:
I am currently using a Digital DLT external tape drive (TZ86). I would like to
speed up my back ups and go to a faster DLT tape drive. I'm looking at a
Benchmark Model DLT1e. Would I have to change any configuration on the Vax
system or can I just swap ou
t the tape drives?

Please see topic (4467) as a start.
That said, you have included mention of both VAX and Alpha in your
question, and have not specifically identified the system itself.
Depending on the SCSI support available, the SCSI controller may be
the limiting factor.
