Third-party modem pinout?

The Question is:

 
I want to connect a US Robotics 56K modem to a decserver 200.  Will a straight
 through DB25 male to female cable work?

The Answer is :

 
  Please see the existing discussions of modems -- the OpenVMS Wizard
  is not particularly familiar with the wiring required by various
  third-party modems, so the particular pinout is unknown.  That
  said, this information is simple to determine using brute-force
  techniques, and can also be determined via use of a diagnostic and
  testing device known as a serial line breakout box.  Again, there
  are extensive discussions of modems here in Ask The Wizard, and
