DECwindows Startup AUTOGEN Loop?

» close window

The Question is:

When I boot my VAXStation 4000/60, I get the following messages when
 SYSTARTUP_VMS has finished processing:

"Some SYSGEN parameters must be reset for DECwindows to start. If you type YES,
AUTOGEN will change these parameters and reboot your system. If you type NO,
AUTOGEN will not run or cause a reboot, but DECwindows will not start. Do you
 want the system to
run AUTOGEN for you?"

I allow the system to run AUTOGEN and reboot, but the same message comes on on
subsequent reboots, and it's even for the same parameter and value. In this
case, it tells me "Free GBLPAGES is XX, should be at least YY". On each
reboot, the numbers XX and Y
Y are the same. Seems something is getting in the way?

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS Wizard has seen this misbehaviour, and ended up booting the
system conversationally (and logging in on the console, without starting
DECwindows), rationalizing the values tested during the startup (in
module DECW$GETPARAMS.COM) with those settings that were explicitly
  requested in the local MODPARAMS.DAT.
