Logging output of system startup?

The Question is:

 
Hi
 
 I'd like to know how to capture, or even periodically stop, the scrolling of
 the console output during a reboot of my Alpha 1200. Many things go flashing
 by during the setup of the raid-1 and raid-5 disks that I'd like to see.
 
This is before VMS starts to load.
 
Actually, I catch a glimpse of an error involving "\tailor" and it is starting
 to bug me.....
 
The system comes up fine, everything works, I'd just like to see what is going
 on.
 
I don't have a printer to try to attach and ctrl-s/ctrl-q do nothing.
