Ask the Wizard Questions

how to create a bootable tape?

The Question is:

I've recently switched from a vax (6.2) to an alpha255
(6.2-1H2). I used stabackit.com (Standalone backup) on
the VAX to create "bootable tape", but it's been removed
from the alpha 6.2. What can I use to create a "bootable"
tape with a backup image file? The unit in question does
not have a second "data" disk to create the "mini 6.2" OS
called for by "pcsi_install_mini.com" file.

  Thanks

The Answer is:

There is no provision for booting from tape on Alpha systems. You can boot
directly from an OpenVMS distribution CD-ROM - all Alpha systems are supposed
to have a local CD-ROM drive or one accessible by Infoserver. When you do
this, you have a "mini VMS" system that can do BACKUP plus most other DCL
commands.
