determine what machine a com file is on

The Question is:

What is the correct way of determining what kind of
machine a given COM file is running on, VAX or Alpha?
It looks like f$getsyi("arch_name") will do the trick,
but I want to know the officially sanctioned method.

This applies to version 5.5-2 and higher.

The Answer is:

f$getsyi("arch_name") is "officially sanctioned", but you can also use
f$getsyi("cpu") and compare against 128.  Lower values are VAX, higher are
Alpha.
