Ask the Wizard Questions

RMS: Corrupted mail file

The Question is:

Greetings,

Occasionally we get a VBN error in someone's mail file.

The error is:

	%mail-e-openin, error opening dev:[dir.dir]mail.mai
-RMS-F-IRC, illegal record encountered; VBN or record
  number = 316

My questions are:

	What is causing this?
 How can we prevent it?
Is there a quick way to fix it. Currently we are copying
all of the files in mail.mai to another *.mai file,
deleting the old mail.mai file and copying the messages
back to a new mail.mai file

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

The Answer is:

There would appear to be a patch available for this particular RMS
problem; look at Digital's Internet patch area:

	http://www.service.digital.com/html/patch_service.html

   The patch is VAXRMS03_061.
