Ask the Wizard Questions

Performance: Memory shortage on Alpha

The Question is:

Hello,

I have seen the earlier question concerning tuning a
DEC 3000/300 AXP.

I have such a machine running as a client in a mixed
cluster, but with only 32MB memory and running:

	OpenVMS 6.2
	UCX 3.3
	Decnet/OSI 6.3
	Motif 1.2-3
	Open3D 2.6

and the performance is terrible.

Is there a lower-limit to how much memory you need for
an AXP or it just that something is wrongly configured.

I have stripped the modparams.dat back to the minimum
specified by the relevant release notes. After letting it
run for a few days I autogened it - after which it would
not boot - autogen had tried to increase the NPAGEDYN.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks

The Answer is:

    Buy more memory.

32MB is the minimum supported memory in order to get OpenVMS running
on an Alpha system. To get adequate performance from a workstation
running Motif, you will need at least 64MB.

Remember that a 32MB Alpha system has the same number of pages as
    a 2MB VAX system (4096).

The extra 32MB is well worth the investement. I would expect a
    dramatic improvement in performance.
