Boot: Alpha without CD
The Question is:
Can you boot an Alpha (DEC3000) from a CD attached to
another Alpha?
We have two DEC3000s sitting side by side. One has an
expansion box with a tape and CD, the other does not.
The former runs openVMS V1.5, with standalone backup as
it's way of doing system backups. The latter runs openVMS
6.2 which must boot off a CD to do system backup.
(Neither system has any data disks.) How can I backup the
Alpha running 6.2 if I have no CD drive? I don't feel
like moving the expansion box around all the time.
BTW, why did they get rid of standalone backup anyway?
Was there something wrong with it?
The Answer is:
All Alpha systems are assumed to be sold with a CD-ROM drive accessable
either locally, served, or via InfoServer. CD-ROM is the distribution
medium for OpenVMS Alpha.
Standalone BACKUP was replaced by a bootable version of OpenVMS in the
OpenVMS Alpha V6.1 release -- one can access DCL from this environment,
and -- unlike traditional standalone BACKUP -- can then directly access
files on the target system disk for maintenance or modifications.
You may want to cluster these two systems, either full-time, or while
you need to perform backups -- in the latter case, the system undergoing
backups can be booted as a satellite off the other system.
