Ask the Wizard Questions

Update: V5.5-2 vs V5.5-2H4

The Question is:

I want to upgrade my Vax3140 to a Vax3196. I know that I am running
OpenVMS 5.5-2, but I am told that the 3196 requires V5.5-2H4. How can
I tell if I have that modification level of the Operating System
software? Is there a SHOW command that can do it? A command procedure
to execute within sys$update or sys$system? Not obvious is that
upgrading to 6.1 or 6.2 would be a major hassle due to the Application.
Some maintenance would be a minor hassle, and no maintenance would be
    ideal.

The Answer is:

    Use the SHOW SYSTEM command:

    V5.5-2:
    $ show system
    VAX/VMS V5.5-2 on node ...

    V5.5-2H4:
    VAX/VMS V5.5-2H4 on node ...

You must upgrade your 3100-40 to V5.5-2H4 *before* upgrading the
hardware. It's not a big deal, maybe a hour or two's work total.
You should receive V5.5-2H4 media (both upgrade and remastered kits)
    with the hardware upgrade kit.
