Ask the Wizard Questions

3rd party DAT tape drive

The Question is:

What is the procedure to be followed when adding third
party DAT tape devices -- the old documentation I have
suggests that possibly SYSGEN is the tool to use; however
this doesn't include the likes of files to specify
inquiry strings in, block size defaults, device class,
whether it can perform the equivalent of bsf/bsr/long
erases, etc..
How do you go about adding a device of this type?

(apologies if this is vague about VMS version number,
the only docs I have are three volumes of the old 5.N set
that don't cover this).

The Answer is:

If the device is recognized as a tape drive, then just plugging it will
make OpenVMS use MKDRIVER to connect it. If the device is not
recognized as a tape drive you might need a 3rd party device driver.
Note that it will probably work, but is not supported as we have
not tested it nor do we warrant it.
