Ask the Wizard Questions

Creating new terminal type

The Question is:

My question is:

Is there a way to "define" a new terminal type under
OpenVMS?

Notes: I have informed them about the TTY_* parameters and
have provided them descriptions of each. They are attempting
to use some terminal emulation software that was developed
specifically for the Emergency/911 software system that they
are using. The emulator expects the host system to respond
with certain escape sequences etc when a particular key is
pressed. My VAR knows how to setup a UNIX host to accommodate
their emulator but they don't know how to do it under
OpenVMS. They have heard of another vendor who had limited
success just by manipulating the OpenVMS TTY_* parameters
but the vendor was never 100% successful in making the
emulation work with just parameter changes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

The Answer is:

                      More information needed

The TT$_, tt2$_, and TT3$_ are defined in starlet and adding new
bits is non-trivial. There is little reason why they should need to
add or redefine any of them. They do need to get them correctly set
for what they are doing. It is hard to tell them what setting they
    need.

Although it might not provide a solution in this particular
case, then general method for defining terminal capabilities
on VMS is through SMG using editting SYS$SYSTEM:SMGTERMS.TXT
and compiling that with SYS$SYSTEM:SMGBLDTRM.EXE to build
a new TERMTABLE.EXE. This process is documented in chapter 5
of the OpenVMS RTL Screen Management (SMG$) Manual.
