FORTRAN and non-standard files

The Question is:

I am using FORTRAN to access an unformatted file created on
a Windows NT system and FTP'd to an alpha running OpenVMS.
The file recieves record properties which are not compatible
with the data that it contains. Is there any way that I can
read the file byte by byte, ignoring the record structure of
the file?

The Answer is:

Not using standard Fortran I/O, which is always record oriented.  You could
use the SYS$CRMPSC system service to map the file into an array and process
it that way, or read it in to an array in 512-byte chunks and index into
the array to access the data.
