Stand Alone Backup Problem
The Question is:
Problems with backup standalone:
- microVAX 3100/90 OpenVMS 5.5-2H4 (2 SCSI controlers)
When doing backup standalone we get 'insuficient virtual memory'
error. What to do ? How to modify system paramiters in
system created by stabakit ?
The Answer is:
The easiest way to adjust SYSGEN parameters for Standalone backup is
to boot conversationally. The exact boot command will depend on your
hardware and where the standalone backup kit was built, but it may look
>>> B/R5:E0000001 disk
At the SYSBOOT prompt you can adjust VIRTUALPAGECNT. The default assumes
a 4MB system (the minimum supported memory configuration). You could
try something like:
SYSBOOT> SET VIRTUALPAGECNT 16384
The parameters are in VAXVMSSYS.PAR in the standalone backup root
on the system disk (usually SYSE if it's on the system disk). If you're
very careful, you can change them menually in SYSGEN with (for example)
SYSGEN> USE SYS$SYSDEVICE:[SYSE.SYSEXE]VAXVMSSYS.PAR
SYSGEN> SET VIRTUALPAGECNT
repeat as desired for other parameters
SYSGEN> WRITE SYS$SYSDEVICE:[SYSE.SYSEXE]VAXVMSSYS.PAR
Note that it is VERY easy to get this wrong and screw up your real
SYSGEN parameters. Please be careful!
You can also find the parameter settings in STABACKIT.COM itself. Search
for the section containing the lines:
$ ! Build a parameter file for the standalone environment. The
$ ! parameters are chosen to allow running on the minimum system,
$ ! while also allowing enough expansion space so that CI/HSC systems
$ ! will run with the same parameters.
$ RUN SYS$SYSROOT:SYSGEN
SET BALSETCNT 4
SET BUGREBOOT 0
SET VIRTUALPAGECNT 8192
Modifications to this file will be reflected in any Standalone backup
kit built subsequently.
