Ask the Wizard Questions

DECaudio questions

The Question is:

I'm working with AUDIO on a DEC3000 Model 300X and seem to have
trouble recording files.

The files I record, I can play back, but the format seems unknown to
applications on other systems (such as a Sun Workstation). However, if
they record sound, I can play it?

Is the recording process on OpenVMS recording the file in a different
format than the standard .AU file, and if so, is there any way to tell
OpenVMS to record in that format.

I even noticed that some of the files in the DECW$EXAMPLES directory
are listed as .AU and others are listed as .AUD (I would like to
record, if possible, the in the .AU format instead of the .AUD
format).

Thanks!

The Answer is:

The version of DECsound that ships with the DECwindows kit can
only record audio files in the DDIF Audio format (.AUD). As you've
seen, this is not compatible with .AU files. We have no plans to
    change this.

There is a new version of DECsound that is much more flexible
in the kinds of audio files it can record. However, this version
ships with the Multimedia Services for OpenVMS V1.4 layered product,
and it only supports the sound card on Alphastations -- it does not
support the sound hardware on the DEC 3000 class workstations.
