Ask the Wizard Questions

Connect OpenVMS to Internet

The Question is:

Hi,

A silly and simple question!

We have a VAX 6610 running v6.2 and a brand new Alphaserver.
All my managers want WWW access to the net. I would like
to offer a FDDI or ISDN link to a provider.

My question...

Where do I start? Do I need to be running a server on my side?
Would this run on the Alpha? The VAx? I just need an overview
to get me going.

Hopefully the cheapest way?

Can you help me???

Take care WIZARD!

The Answer is:

Contact various Internet access providers directly, and determine what
protocols and datalinks are necessary for the particular provider.

You do not need to be running a WWW server on the local systems,
though you may/will need to obtain and install an IP package such
as DEC TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS (UCX) -- you will need to work
with the provider to determine an appropriate (cost/speed) datalink,
and to determine what protocols are supported by the provider.

Once the general datalink options and requirements are determined,
the necessary local hardware and software can be determined.
