New—HP HSM supports HP Integrity servers, AlphaServer systems, and VAX systems
HP Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) optimizes storage resources
for OpenVMS systems by automatically and dynamically assigning less
frequently accessed data to more cost-effective media. If your business
is like most, it is generating more data than ever before, squeezing
online disk capacity to the limit. This additional information would
give you an advantageif you could access it. But inefficiently
stored data slows system performance and overloads system managers.
HP Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) for OpenVMS improves
application performance, reduces management costs, and enhances
data protection by "shelving," or moving less frequently
used data from online to near-line storage. In contrast to archiving,
HSM keeps shelved data accessible and moves it back online when
accessed. Also, since only the header information for shelved files
remains online and only online data needs regular backing up, HSM
greatly reduces the time needed for backup operations.
Do you have any idea how old the files on your disk are? We can help. The following links offer tools that
can evaluate your disk for HSM and determine how old the files are, and given shelving
criteria, give you an idea of how much space can be saved by using HSM. These executables look only at the disk, they do not do any shelving or modification to the disk in any way.
