Plug-In Modules

If you are using Distributed NetBeans for OpenVMS, you do not need to download or install any plug-in modules.

The Distributed NetBeans client module contains support for the following features on OpenVMS. These modules are contained in the client .nbm file. You do not need to install these modules separately.

Distributed NetBeans for OpenVMS File Access
Distributed BASIC Support for OpenVMS
Distributed C/C++ Support for OpenVMS
Distributed COBOL Support for OpenVMS
Distributed FORTRAN Support for OpenVMS
Distributed PASCAL Support for OpenVMS
Distributed DCL Support for OpenVMS
EDTkeypad Support (disabled by default)

Important  Install these plug-ins on OpenVMS systems only.

HP OpenVMS Engineering is pleased to make available plug-in modules for NetBeans designed to maximize the value of NetBeans to the OpenVMS developer community.

Modular design is an integral part of the NetBeans extensible architecture. NetBeans comprises core modules that provide the core functionality of the IDE. Plug-in modules are developed by the open-source community to provide new features that build upon or, in some cases, replace the standard NetBeans functionality.

These modules can be installed any time after you install NetBeans. They are available from the NetBeans for OpenVMS Update Center, which is accessed within the IDE using the Update Center command. They are also available for direct download from the modules download page if you wish to install them locally after downloading.

Online Help Explains Each Module
How to use each module is fully explained in the online help that is available through the NetBeans JavaHelp system when you install each module. (See NetBeans for OpenVMS Release Notes: Using JavaHelp.)

OpenVMS COBOL, Fortran, and C/C++ Compiler Support Modules

The COBOL, Fortran, and C/C++ language support modules extend NetBeans for OpenVMS to be your code development environment. The module offers a range of development capabilities that are fully integrated within the NetBeans environment. These include: source code (and command file) editing with customizable syntax highlighting; compilation and build execution within the NetBeans IDE, including error navigation (or, externally, in a DECterm window); script execution using DCL command procedures of single or multiple source files, and fully customizable property settings on a global, per project, and per file basis.

OpenVMS DCL Command Module

This module offers a range of execution capabilities that are fully integrated within the NetBeans environment. These include command file editing and execution within the NetBeans IDE (or, externally, in an interactive DECterm window).

OpenVMS CMS Support Module

This module makes available CMS source code control functionality within the NetBeans IDE. CMS commands are seamlessly integrated with the NetBeans Explorer file system, leveraging NetBeans built-in Version Control System (VCS) support. You can work with new or existing CMS libraries. You may also continue using CMS as a standalone version control system while using it in the NetBeans environment. Requires NetBeans Version 3.5.1 or higher.

OpenVMS EDT Editor Keybindings Module

The module offers the convenience of EDT keypad functionality by updating NetBeans' global keymap with the keybindings used by the standard EDT Editor for OpenVMS. This is done while maintaining the full range of NetBeans IDE functionality. The module may be used in the following ways:

  • When running NetBeans natively on OpenVMS.
  • When using a PC as an X Window display device (while running NetBeans on OpenVMS).
  • On non-OpenVMS platforms where NetBeans is using Java 2 SDK 1.4.0 or later.

Installation Instructions

  1. Open the NetBeans Update Center wizard (choose Update Center from the Tools menu).
  2. With the Check the Web... option selected, choose the NetBeans for OpenVMS Update Center (or NetBeans for OpenVMS Update Center Beta) and click Next.
    -or-
Choose the Install Manually Downloaded Modules option if applicable (see the Modules Download Page) and click Next.
  3. Follow the instructions on the wizard for completing installation.
  4. After clicking Finish, if you are prompted to restart NetBeans, you must choose Restart the IDE to complete installation of the module.

Single-user versus multi-user installation
Standard NetBeans module installation is single-user. If you want to do a systemwide installation, select the Global? checkbox on the View Certificates and Install Modules page.

Important
When choosing a systemwide installation, make sure:

  • You have write access to the directories in which NetBeans is installed.
  • No other users are running NetBeans while you are doing the update.
DO NOT PROCEED WITHOUT ENSURING THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS

You may also need to change the protection of installed modules so that others can access the files.

Note  If you globally install the COBOL plug-in module, you must manually set the file protection on two files in the installation directory.

Set the protection on the COBOL plug-in files lexer.jar and lexer-editorbridge.jar as follows:

 $ set prot <NetBeans Global Installation Directory>.modules.ext]lexer*.jar/prot=w:re
