Levels of EFS Support
---------------------
To help determine the expected behavior of OpenVMS utilities and commands
and applications in the EFS environment, the following levels of support
have been established. Each level outlines the acceptable behavior of a
product when it encounters an extended (ODS-5 compliant) file specification.
The levels of support for EFS are as follows:
1. FULL SUPPORT: (Code = F)
----------------
OpenVMS products that offer full support for EFS have been
specifically modified to take advantage of all the features of
extended file naming. These products should accept and handle
extended file specifications without error and without modifying
their expected case. [1]

Additionally, OpenVMS products that fully support EFS can accept
and produce long file specifications that exceed the traditional
255 byte limit in their original form - without requiring them
to be compressed into a Directory ID (DID) or File ID (FID).
2. DEFAULT SUPPORT: (Code = D)
-------------------
OpenVMS products with default support have had little
or no modification to take advantage of EFS features. These products
are expected to handle most of the attributes of extended file
specifications (such as new characters and deep directory structures)
correctly. However, issues with case sensitivity and case blindness
(such as converting lowercase characters to uppercase) may occur.
In contrast with products that have full support, products with
default support rely on DID and FID compression offered by RMS to
handle long file specifications. As a result, these products may
encounter one or more of the following restrictions related to DID
handle long file specifications. As a result, these products may

and FID compression:
- Accessing long file names over a DECnet network. Although DECnet
also maintains a length limit of 255 bytes, this does not include
the node name. When accessing remote files via DECnet, a shortened
file specification - without the node name - is passed over the
network. As a result, long file specifications can be passed through
DECnet without being compressed. When the receiving node attempts
to complete the file specification by attaching a node name, the
valid length limit is exceeded and an RMS error is returned.
- Performing accurate matching operations in an environment where
FID compression is used. For example, wildcard matching operations
may not capture all target file names since the long file names
may be represented in their numeric FID form. This specifically
applies to matching operations that are performed outside of RMS.
- Performing wildcard operations using a FID as input, for example:
$ DIRECTORY a[1,2,3]*.txt
$ COPY a[1,2,3].txt *.txt2
Since FIDs are a unique numeric representation of one file, they
cannot be used to represent or match any other file.
- Creating files with long names that require FID compression or by
specifying a FID directly.
3. NO SUPPORT FOR EXTENDED FILE NAMING: (Code = E)

OpenVMS products in this category can function on ODS-5 volumes;
however they can operate with traditional file specifications only.
Products in this category do not work with extended filenames. These
products should not be used in an EFS environment since DIGITAL cannot
ensure that they will function successfully when they encounter
extended file specifications.
4. NO SUPPORT FOR ODS-5 VOLUMES: (Code = N)
--------------------------------
OpenVMS products in this category cannot handle the ODS-5 volume
structure or extended file naming. These products should not be used
in an EFS environment since DIGITAL cannot ensure that they will
function successfully on ODS-5 volumes even when they only encounter
traditional file specifications.
