OpenVMS Technical Journal - V14 March 2010

Welcome to V14 of the OpenVMS Technical Journal. It is indeed a great pleasure in bringing this edition of the Technical Journal  to all the VMS enthusiasts around the world. We trust that you will find all the articles informative and useful.

The Oracle Rdb Run-Time Code Generator for the OpenVMS Itanium Platform

Article Abstract: For more than 20 years, the Oracle Rdb database engine has created subroutines of executable code generated at run time. Native executable code streams for VAX and Alpha architectures are generated. When moving to the Itanium architecture, an instruction emulation environment was initially employed to speed development and product introduction. This emulation environment has been transitioned to generation of native Itanium instruction streams. This paper discusses the environment and development of the run-time executable code generation within the Oracle Rdb database engine on Itanium OpenVMS systems.

Author Bio:
Norman J. Lastovica is a Senior Managing Engineer within Oracle's Rdb Engineering organization. Mr. Lastovica has over 25 years experience with large OpenVMS systems design and development including several major Oracle Rdb benchmark and prototyping efforts on behalf of Rdb customers. Currently leader of the KODA project team, he shares responsibility for the physical data storage, index, journaling, recovery, row cache, hot standby, and LogMiner components of the Rdb product family.

Article Abstract: Power utilization of data centers is becoming a critical factor, often making a crucial impact to the total cost of ownership. It also can make a serious impact on the environment of our increasingly resource conscious world. In this context, this article focuses on the Power Management facilities provided by HP OpenVMS for Integrity servers Version 8.4. While Power Management features are not new to OpenVMS, the strategies employed by various versions differ. This article elucidates these and helps the administrator make a decision as to when and how to use each power setting.

Author Bios:
Since joining VMS Engineering in 1985, Burns Fisher has worked in many engineering and project leading roles. These include contributing to the MIT X11 protocol, leading the DECwindows port to Alpha, contributing to the System Code Debugger and SCSI clusters, and technical leadership of the Extended File Specifications project.  As a member of the VMS Exec group, he designed and wrote RAD-based scheduling and RAD-based pool allocation for GS-series AlphaServer systems.  More recently, he designed and wrote Software Interrupt Services (SWIS), code to do low level interruption and change-mode handling, software interrupts, and AST initiation for VMS on the Itanium Processor Family. Burns is a co-inventor on 3 patents relating to OpenVMS work and holds a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester, NY.

Prithvi Srihari is a Software Engineer in the OpenVMS Kernel Development Team. He develops new features for the OS and resolves existing issues. In addition to his technical role, he also interacts with customers to better understand their environments and needs. Prior to joining HP, he worked for 5 years in support and development in the networking stack of AIX. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering (Computer Networks) from the University of Southern California and a degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Bangalore University. His areas of expertise include Network Protocols, Internet Routing, Device Drivers, and kernel programming. His interests are in computer networking, virtualization, customer engagement, management, and marketing.

Veena K joined HP in 2000 and since then has been working with OpenVMS Engineering. In her career span of 9 years, she has worked on storage applications, DECnet, LAN drivers and is currently part of the VMS EXEC team.

Article Abstract: This Knowledge Brief (KB) discusses the Open VMS performance problems that occur when Paged Dynamic Memory (PAGEDYN) becomes excessively fragmented. PAGEDYN is a general purpose area of memory maintained by VMS for storing data structures such as shared logical names, ACP Caches, resident image headers, known file entries, and structures for RMS file sharing. This KB also discusses how PAGEDYN fragmentation can be detected, how the PAGEDYN fragmentation can affect performance, and how the performance problems can be eliminated.

Author Bio: John Hockett started programming on Digital Equipment Computers on the RT-11 Operating system in 1974 and had the opportunity to manage the first VAX installed in the State of Idaho that anchored a real time satellite data collection system for the Department of Interior. John joined Digital Equipment in 1985 and is currently a Consultant IV with the VMS Global Competency Center, an NRSS for HP high-profile customers, and an Escalation Specialist. John is often utilized by HP sales to provide VMS technical assistance in closing sales and supporting customer migrations. John holds a BS in Computer Science from Colorado State University and lives with his wife and family in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Article Abstract: One of the challenges that the customers face with the legacy OpenVMS environments is to have their legacy VMS boxes running mission critical applications monitored real time and the incidents are fixed as soon as they are detected. The challenges here are to have their existing monitoring systems integrated with the up-to-date solutions and to have the monitoring systems deployed at the first place when there is no monitoring system already in place. We have developed a DCL based monitoring solution (SYSMON) targeted to be deployed on the legacy VMS environments. This has already been successfully deployed and running on the systems of 3 customer accounts.

Author Bio:  Muthuvel Balasubramanian is with HP for over 5 years. Prior to joining HP, he was with CMC Ltd for over 3 years. His role at HP is to provide platform support for OpenVMS customers. He holds a Diploma in Electronics and Communication engineering and a degree in MSC, Information Technology.

Article Abstract: A technique will be presented to configure TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS for multiple systems in a consistent way, without having to go through all of TCPIP$CONFIG.COM for every system.

Author Bio: Bart Zorn started as an IBM OS/370 PL/I programmer in the 70's. From 1978 he worked on a PDP11 with RSTS/E and since 1985 he worked mainly with first VAX/VMS and later OpenVMS.

CIFS Server provides file security to Windows clients using OpenVMS file security based on OpenVMS identifiers. This article explains various aspects of CIFS Server file security. The scope of this article is limited to CIFS Server configured as member server in an active directory domain.

SimH Supports Availability Manager Development Environment at HP

Article Abstract: This article describes how Barry solved the problem of VAX support for the Availability Manager when the VAX hardware failed. It describes the investigation for various solutions, the decisions made, and a section describing the configuration in detail. It also describes some of the advantages to software development and testing when using virtual machines that were found during the conversion from physical to virtual machines.

Author Bio:
  Barry Kierstein worked with OpenVMS since 1981, and worked for Hewlett-Packard for almost fourteen years. His work at Hewlett-Packard was with the System Management group within the OpenVMS organization and is most known for his project leadership work and advocacy of the Availability Manager product. He is also known for various presentations and hands-on workshops at the OpenVMS Bootcamp, DECUS, CETS, HP Tech Forum, European Technical Update Days and various webinars dealing with OpenVMS performance, Availability Manager, HP Virtualization strategy around HP SIM/VSE, Blades and virtual machines.


Virtual Alpha Systems: Quality Control and Testing

Article Abstract: Virtual Alpha systems are software abstraction layers that turn a modern, industry-standard server into the equivalent of an Alpha hardware system. Such systems must present to the unmodified OpenVMS or TRU64 operating system an environment that is identical in functionality to the original hardware. A good virtual system allows the use of a completely unmodified OS, including its drivers, all customer applications, and the original PCI controllers.

Quality control and testing of such virtual systems require extensive test procedures, comparable to those used to develop the original hardware. The test phases and the quality assurance process had to be established for these new technologies, and they are described in this article.

Author Bio: Dr. Robert Boers started his career as a sales representative for Digital Equipment Corporation in the Netherlands. After several years in the IT department of RaboBank, he returned to Digital Equipment Europe in Geneva. In various engineering functions, he was responsible for Telecommunication compliance, the European External R&D program, established several Digital engineering centers in Western Europe, and created Digital's software migration center in Moscow.

Robert has an engineering degree from the Technical University in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, an Honorary Doctorate from the Moscow Engineering-Physics Technical University, and completed the International Advanced Management Program from IMD, Lausanne and INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France. Robert founded Stromasys in 1998 as a management buyout at the time of the merger between Digital and Compaq.
